Murrieta water is classified very hard. That single fact explains most of the drain behaviour people here find baffling, and it is the reason a drain cable keeps failing to fix the same line.
Murrieta tap water runs at roughly twelve grains per gallon, which puts it firmly in the very hard band. The supply comes from San Jacinto Basin groundwater supplemented with imported Colorado River water, and neither source is soft. The city is split between two water districts and it makes no meaningful difference: whichever side of Murrieta you live on, your water carries a substantial dissolved mineral load.
Most conversation about hard water concerns the incoming side, because that is where you notice it. The important part is not the thickness of the deposit. It is the texture. A new drain line is slick, and waste slides along it without finding anywhere to stop. A scaled line is rough at a microscopic level, and rough pipe catches things.
This is the mechanism people miss. Mineral scale on its own rarely closes a pipe. What it does is give everything else something to hold onto.
Cooking fat leaves your kitchen sink as a warm liquid. It flows perfectly well for the first stretch, then cools, comes out of suspension and looks for a surface. On smooth pipe there is not much to grip and most of it keeps moving toward the sewer. On a wall already textured with mineral deposit, it sticks. Once the first layer of grease is down, the surface is stickier still, and every subsequent wash adds to it.
Hair and soap in the bathroom branch behave the same way. So does lint bonded with detergent residue in the laundry line. The result is a composite layer of mineral and organic material that is considerably tougher than either would be alone.
A drain cable is a rotating steel snake. Fed into a line, it finds the restriction and bores through it. Water starts moving, the sink drains, and everybody reasonably concludes the problem is solved.
Look at what has physically happened. The cable has cut a channel through the centre of a deposit and, in doing so, has polished the sides of that channel fairly smooth. The deposit is still there. The bore is still reduced. What you have is a temporary tunnel through a permanent problem, and it closes up again at whatever rate your household adds to it.
If the same drain has been snaked more than once in two years, the issue is almost certainly not what is in the pipe. It is what is on the pipe.
There is nothing wrong with a cable used for what it is good at. A single object lodged in a trap, a toy in a toilet, a localised hair plug close to the fixture: a cable is the right tool, faster and cheaper than anything else. The mistake is applying it to a whole-bore coating problem, where it can only ever produce a temporary result.
A hydro jetter feeds a hose upstream into the line with a nozzle on the end. Most of the jets face backward. They do two things at once: the reaction drives the nozzle forward up the pipe, and the spray scours the wall through the full three hundred and sixty degrees as it travels.
The debris is then carried downstream to the sewer on the water, rather than being packed tighter or dragged back out. The objective is not to make a hole. The objective is to finish with the pipe wall you started with when the house was built.
Jetters can run at pressures that will cut masonry. Nothing in a house needs that. Residential work here typically runs between 1,500 and 4,000 PSI, with flow rate and nozzle selected for the pipe material and what is on the wall. A penetrating nozzle to open a path, then a flushing or chain-style head to take the deposit back.
This is why a camera pass first is not an upsell. ABS and PVC take jetting easily. Clay is fine when its joints are sound and a problem when they are not. Cast iron in an older Murrieta house may have thinned so much behind the scale that the deposit is close to load-bearing, and on those lines the right answer is a gentle clean and a repair conversation, not maximum pressure.
If nothing is slow, do nothing. There is no maintenance schedule that every Murrieta home needs to be on, and anyone selling you an annual jetting subscription for a healthy line is selling you a subscription.
The signals worth acting on are repetition and breadth. A line that blocks on a cycle was never actually cleared. Multiple fixtures slow at the same time points at the shared line rather than a local clog. A kitchen sink that has never quite recovered since the last clearance is telling you the wall is loaded.
Yes, partially, and we have nothing to sell you either way. Softening the incoming supply reduces what gets deposited from here on, which slows the return of scale. It does nothing about the layer already on the wall, and it has no effect at all on cooking grease, which is the other half of the problem on the line that fails most often. Think of it as lengthening the interval rather than removing the need.
Against mineral scale, they are close to useless. The caustic and enzymatic products sold for household drains are formulated to attack organic matter, and calcium carbonate bonded to a pipe wall is not organic matter. They also leave a quantity of aggressive liquid sitting in your line, which is worth considering if a technician has to open that pipe later. On old cast iron, repeated use does the remaining metal no favours at all.
Murrieta's water hardness is not a marketing hook, it is a measurable local condition with a predictable consequence for drainage. Houses here accumulate pipe wall deposit faster than houses in soft-water regions, and that deposit is the thing making your line fail repeatedly.
Once you understand that, the choice between tools stops being a matter of opinion. If the problem is an object, use a cable. If the problem is the wall, the only way to fix it is to clean the wall.

Frequently, and more for the camera footage than the cleaning itself. A recorded inspection showing a clean, sound lateral removes one of the standard negotiating points before it comes up. Discovering a problem on your own timetable is a much cheaper conversation than discovering it during escrow.
