California Oaks went in as a master-planned community, which means a great many houses were built to a small number of plans, by the same trades, at roughly the same time. For drains that produces a pattern you can almost set your watch by. When we get called to one street, the complaint is frequently identical to one we handled two streets over.
The homes are not old. That is exactly why owners are often surprised. Nobody expects a thirty-year-old house to have a drainage problem, and the assumption is that something must be stuck. Usually nothing is stuck. The bore has simply been getting smaller since the day the water was turned on.
Murrieta water sits in the very hard band at around twelve grains per gallon. Every gallon leaving your house carries dissolved calcium and magnesium, and a fraction of it plates out onto the pipe wall on the way. On any single day the amount is invisible. Over thirty years of showers, dishwashers and laundry it is a measurable layer.
The problem is not really the mineral, it is the surface it creates. New ABS is slick and sheds waste readily. A scaled wall is rough, and rough pipe catches. That is the mechanism by which a house that drained perfectly for twenty years starts having problems in its third decade without anything obvious changing.
The kitchen branch gets the worst of it. Cooking fat leaves the sink as a warm liquid, travels a short distance, cools, and comes out of suspension looking for somewhere to settle. On smooth pipe much of it keeps moving. On a wall that is already textured with scale, it has something to grip, and once the first layer is down every subsequent wash adds to it.
Garbage disposals make this considerably worse and most of these houses have one. A disposal does not remove food waste, it reduces the particle size and sends it down the same line, where it embeds in the grease layer. The combination of very hard water, a disposal and a builder-standard two-inch kitchen branch is the single most common job we do in this part of Murrieta.
This is also the failure that most stubbornly resists cabling. A cable through a grease and scale layer bores a channel and polishes the sides. Water flows, the customer is happy for a season, and the channel closes up again. If you have had the same kitchen line snaked twice, you are not unlucky, you are being sold the wrong tool.
There is an upside to tract construction. Because the plans repeat, we frequently know the likely route of the line and the probable cleanout position before arriving, which shortens the diagnostic part of the visit and keeps the cost down.
It also means the second camera pass is genuinely informative. When you have seen the same plan thirty times, an unusual reading stands out immediately, whether that is an unexpected belly from settlement or a section that a previous owner had re-plumbed after a repair.

Because the driver here is water chemistry rather than age. Thirty years of twelve-grain water deposits a real, measurable layer inside a drain line regardless of how modern the pipe is. ABS resists it better than cast iron, but it does not prevent it, and once the wall is rough enough to catch grease the process accelerates. It is very normal for houses of exactly this vintage to need a first proper cleaning around now.
It genuinely helps, and we have no interest in selling you one, so take that as neutral. Softening the incoming supply reduces what gets deposited going forward, which slows the return of scale. It does nothing about the layer already on the wall, and it does not address grease from cooking, which is the other half of the problem on a kitchen line. Treat it as a way of extending the interval, not eliminating the need.
Not really a fault, more a consequence. Builder-standard line sizing and routing was entirely to code and perfectly adequate, and it gave you twenty-plus years of trouble-free service. What nobody designed around was three decades of very hard water combined with near-universal garbage disposal use. The uniformity you are noticing is just the same plan reaching the same threshold at roughly the same time.
The camera answers that and it is worth doing properly. If only the kitchen fixtures are slow, the branch is the likely job and there is no reason to pay for more. If the downstairs toilet gurgles when the washer drains, or the lowest fixture in the house backs up first, that points at the main and cleaning just the branch would be money wasted.
